Hollandale Grocery opened on July 1, 1996 by John and Amy Thronson. Though it has been in the same family since 1958. Amy’s parents Martin Jr. and Marie Gilbertson opened their store Gilbertson’s Grocery on July 1, 1958. John and Amy are continuing the second generation of this special small town grocery store.

John grew up in the area on a dairy farm. He graduated from Luther College in Decorah, Iowa. After college he taught high school social studies in Aurora, Illinois. Amy grew up in Hollandale in the grocery business. Though she didn’t plan to be a grocer after high school. She graduated from Carthage College in Kenosha, Wisconsin. She worked in Public Relations and Human Resources in the Chicago area. Amy’s parents talked about retirement and John and Amy decided to buy the store. The Thronson’s have three grown children Benjamin, Owen and Siri who grew up working in the store.

Hollandale Grocery has made changes in the look of the store over the years however, the quality service and wide range of items available have continued. Hollandale Grocery strives to provide the best customer service experience. Hollandale Grocery offers a fresh meat counter, local cheeses, fresh produce and a wide selection of groceries.
